Gist — Frequently Asked Questions

Will Gist work without an internet connection?

Yes. Gist works entirely offline. All file analysis and name generation happen on your Mac using Apple's on-device frameworks. No internet connection is required at any point. You can use Gist on a plane, in a cabin, or with Wi-Fi turned off.

What happens if Apple Intelligence is not available?

Gist requires Apple Intelligence to be enabled on your Mac. If it is not available, Gist will display an explanation screen and will not proceed to the main interface.

To enable Apple Intelligence: open System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and follow the setup prompts. Apple Intelligence requires a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) running macOS 26 Tahoe or later.

If the model shows as "not ready," wait a few minutes for initial setup to complete, then relaunch Gist.

"Apple Intelligence Unavailable" error

This means Apple Intelligence is either not enabled or not finished setting up on your Mac. See the question above for instructions.

The suggested filename is generic or wrong

Some files have minimal extractable content — for example, scanned images without readable text, or encrypted PDFs. Gist's suggestions are based on what it can read from the file.

You can edit any suggested name directly in the Suggested Names pane before applying. Click the name text to edit it.

If you consistently see poor suggestions for a particular file type, please email us at support@jutco.net with an example (or a description of the file type) so we can improve future versions.

A file type I dropped was ignored

Gist currently supports: PDF, PNG, JPEG, HEIC, plain text (.txt), RTF, Markdown (.md), and CSV.

Other formats (DOCX, XLSX, GIF, TIFF, video, audio, etc.) are not yet supported. We plan to expand file type support in future updates. If Gist skips files you dropped, they were likely in an unsupported format.

How do I undo a rename?

Two ways:

  • Immediately after renaming: Use Edit > Undo Rename (Cmd+Z) or click the Undo button in the toolbar.
  • Later (even after quitting): Open the History pane (Shift+Cmd+H or View > Show History) and click "Undo" on any batch entry.

Undo works by moving files back to their original names. If the original file has been moved or deleted since renaming, undo may not succeed for that file.

Permission error when renaming

macOS sandboxing requires Gist to have explicit access to each file. If you see a permission error:

  • Re-add the file using the + button or drag it fresh from Finder. This re-grants Gist sandboxed access.
  • If renaming files inside a folder, make sure you granted access to the folder (not just individual files).
Where is my rename history stored?

Locally inside Gist's sandboxed container:

~/Library/Containers/com.computarmachine.Gist/Data/Library/Application Support/Gist/rename_history.json

This file is never sent off your device. You can clear all history from the History pane using the "Clear" button.

Slow processing on large batches

Large PDFs (50+ pages) and batches of 100+ files take longer to process. Tips:

  • Process files in smaller batches (20–30 at a time)
  • Increase concurrent analyses in Settings > Processing
  • Close other resource-intensive applications

Processing speed depends on your Mac's Apple silicon chip. M1 Pro/Max/Ultra and newer chips will be noticeably faster.
